Don’t get frustrated when your Priorities become a Priority

Feb 05, 2024

If you have ever been in one of my classes or have been a one-on-one client of mine, the title of this blog post may be familiar to you. That’s because I often notice that many of us tend to absolutely know what our priorities are, and yet we get frustrated when we can’t pull forward into other endeavors when our priorities need our attention.

Understanding the Frustration of Competing Priorities

Some examples include when we have a new business that we are working on that promises to be an excellent source of our potential income, fulfillment, and impact in the world. We love this business and know that it is going to require many, many hours of work to get it up and running to the point that our vision requires. And then, we get the flu, or our partner must go out of town for business, leaving us with the lion’s share of the responsibilities of our household, or we get distracted by doing our taxes. Sound familiar? I thought it might.

When these things inevitably happen, we have a choice to make. We can get frustrated with our progress, we can start to question our ability and motivation, or we can see it for what it really is, a temporary delay in our forward movement.

Choosing How to Respond to Life’s Interruptions

The choice in how we respond to our circumstances is always ours. In fact, it is the only thing in many situations that we actually do have control over. And yet, for most of us, we spiral out of control with anxiety and fear, assuming that we will never be able to change the course. WOW!! That is a lot of drama. And we bring that pain and drama upon ourselves.

There is a scene in one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies where Captain Jack Sparrow says, “The problem isn’t the problem; the problem is your attitude about the problem.”

Be sure that you are creating an attitude of acceptance of where you are, where you are going, and what needs attention in the moment. This way, when things return to normal, you can get right back on track working on your highest potential. After all, that is one of your highest priorities.

With Love,
Jille
